Bitch - a female dog.
​Breeder -someone who owns either the bitch or both dogs and sells the pups they produce. There are all types of reasons for breeding, many will keep pups for themselves and sell the remainder. The breeders who breed only for profit and have large numbers of bitches are the ones where there is a risk that you are buying from a puppy farm. Know the risks.

Endorsement - The breeder may have placed an endorsement on the puppy’s registration certificate and these will need to be explained to the new owner before or at the date of sale. For example a restriction that pups cannot be used for mating unless fully health tested. Breeder must be contacted and given evidence before they lift the endorsement. Read more
Eye test - to ensure that there is no clinical evidence of hereditary eye disease in dogs that are to be used for breeding. A secondary purpose is to identify breed related problems which may be inherited, especially if they have welfare implications for the dog. Link

Field Trials - competition to test the working ability of Gundogs in competitive conditions. Trials resemble, as closely as possible, a day's shooting in the field and dogs are expected to work with all manner of game. Retrieve - when a dog leaves the handler to find game or dummies under instruction from the handler and brings it back to the handler, delivering tenderly to hand. Under competition conditions if the game or dummy is dropped or not given to the handler then the dog and handler are penalised. This is because if it was live game it could escape and may be injured.

Sire - is the father of a puppy or puppies.
Socialisation - is about giving pups lots of positive new experiences, especially in their first few weeks of life. Socialisation has a big influence on your puppy. It teaches them about the world they live in and how they should react to normal, everyday events. A well-socialised puppy is more likely to grow up to be a friendly and outgoing dog.

Stud book number - a stud book number is gained when your dog either wins a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th placed award, a Diploma of Merit or a Certificate of Merit at a field trials stake held under The Kennel Club Field Trial Regulations. See more
